Benefits of Warming Up Before Your Workout

If you’ve ever slid into Sweat Fixx right as class starts (hi, it’s all of us 🙋‍♀️), you already know the drill: shoes on, grab the weights, rower strapped — boom. But according to Ariel, PT and co-owner of our sister studio FIXXED, your body is absolutely not ready for that.

And honestly? She’s right.

A proper warm-up isn’t “nice to have.” It’s the difference between moving well and moving sloppy… between feeling powerful and feeling tight… between building strength and accidentally irritating something that sidelines you for weeks.

Here’s why PTs care so much about this stuff and exactly what Ariel wants you doing before class.

Warm-ups do way more than get your heart rate up. Here’s what’s happening under the hood:

1. Your nervous system switches from “park” to “drive.”

This is a big one. Your brain needs a few minutes to wake up the stabilizers, core, and muscles you’re about to use. When this connection is weak, your form falls apart fast.

2. Your muscles literally become more elastic.

Warm tissue = safer tissue. Cold muscles are stiff and resistant (aka more likely to strain). When they’re warm, they move better and produce more power.

3. Your joints prep for load.

A good warm-up lubricates your hips, shoulders, knees, and spine. When joints aren’t prepped, your body compensates — usually in ways that lead to pain.

4. You improve your form before class even starts.

People think form issues are about not knowing what to do… but a lot of the time, you just weren’t warm enough to move well.

5. You reduce your risk of injury.

Most tweaks happen right at the beginning of a workout — when tissues are cold and mechanics are off. Five minutes upfront saves you from weeks of managing pain later.

Ariel’s 5-Minute PT-Approved Warm-Up

This is the exact warm-up Ariel gives her PT clients before any Sweat Fixx ROW class. It hits mobility, activation, and stability — the three things your body needs most.

Once you start doing this consistently, you’ll notice your rowing feels smoother, your squats feel stronger, and the first block doesn’t feel like you’re dragging concrete legs around.
