Understanding the Kettlebell Clean

The kettlebell clean is a powerful movement that requires both strength and control. However, it’s easy to fall into common mistakes that can hinder your progress. One of the most noticeable errors is elbow flaring. When the elbow flares WAY out, it can lead to imbalances and even injury.

Key Cues for a Proper Kettlebell Clean:

  • Zip the Elbow Back, Not Out: Aim to keep your elbow close to your body as you perform the movement. This will help you maintain better control and reduce the risk of injury.
  • Keep the Bell Close: The kettlebell should travel along your body’s centerline. Keeping it close helps in generating power and maintaining balance.
  • Punch Your Hand Through: As you lift the kettlebell, punch your hand through to ensure the bell doesn’t flop over your wrist. This will create a smooth transition and better grip.
  • Finish with Everything Stacked: Your body should be in alignment at the top of the movement. A stacked position ensures you’re using your strength effectively.

Clean ≠ Curl

It’s essential to remember that a kettlebell clean is not the same as a curl. While curls isolate the biceps, the clean is about generating power through your entire body. Focus on control and precision rather than just lifting the weight!
