How to Fix Your Dumbbell RDL Form

If you’ve ever wondered why your Romanian Deadlift (RDL) still hits your lower back more than your hamstrings or glutes, you’re not alone. At Sweat Fixx Wakefield and Sweat Fixx Arlington, we see this all the time—especially with people new to strength training or those coming from cardio-heavy workouts.
We recently shared an Instagram reel showing exactly how to fix your dumbbell RDL form using a foam roller (yep, that long tube you normally use for recovery can totally level up your lift). Check it out below 👇 and then let’s break it down.
The Problem: Most People Are Doing RDLs Wrong
Here’s what we see over and over:
- Rounded backs
- Caved shoulders
- Dumbbells drifting way off the shins
- Dropping too low just to “feel it more”
All of these mistakes add up to one thing—unnecessary strain on your lower back and way less activation in your posterior chain (aka your hamstrings and glutes).
The RDL is one of the most effective strength training moves you can do when done right—but form is everything. At Sweat Fixx, our coaches are obsessed with helping you move well, not just move more.
The Fix: Grab a Foam Roller
Here’s the move:
Hold a foam roller vertically in front of your body so it lightly touches your shins. As you hinge your hips back, your goal is to keep that roller pinned to your shins the entire time.
This simple tool forces your hips to move first (not your knees or back), teaches you to keep your spine neutral, and trains proper hinge mechanics that carry over into every lower-body movement.
When you do it right:
- Your back stays flat
- Your shoulders stay back
- Your lats stay engaged
- The foam roller doesn’t move
Once you can consistently nail that hinge pattern, then it’s time to add the dumbbells back in.
Because strength training isn’t just about lifting heavy—it’s about lifting well.
