Bent-Over Row Form: Common Mistakes and How to Fix Them

The bent-over row is one of the most effective strength training exercises you can do — when it’s done correctly. We are here to show you how to do a bent over row correctly to get the most out of this movement!

It builds upper-back strength, improves posture, supports shoulder health, and carries over into just about everything else you do in the gym (and in daily life). But it’s also one of the most commonly misperformed exercises we see.

Recently, Sweat Fixx owner Elise Caira posted an Instagram video showing two side-by-side bent-over rows and asked a simple question:
Can you spot which one is wrong?

At first glance, they look similar. Same movement. Same weight.
But one version builds strength — the other puts unnecessary stress on the spine.

Let’s break down what’s happening and how to fix it.

The Most Common Mistake We See

The biggest issue we see with dumbbell bent-over rows is rounding through the upper back and failing to engage the core.

This usually happens when:

  • The weight is too heavy
  • Core engagement is missing
  • The lifter is rushing the movement
  • There’s no awareness of spinal position

In Elise’s Instagram video, one rep shows a neutral spine with the core braced and the back doing the work.
The other shows the upper back rounding and the torso collapsing slightly as the dumbbell moves.

That small difference completely changes where the load goes.

Proper Dumbbell Bent-Over Row Cues

If you want to get the most out of your rows — and protect your body while doing it — focus on these cues:

  • Brace your core like you’re about to be punched
  • Neutral spine from head to tailbone (no rounding)
  • Hinge at the hips, not the low back
  • Soft bend in the knees
  • Pull elbows toward your back pockets, not straight up
  • Control the weight — no jerking or momentum

A good rule of thumb: if your torso position changes dramatically during the rep, the weight is probably too heavy or your core isn’t doing its job.
